چکیده

[1] The mixing zone between freshwater and seawater in a coastal aquifer is an important transition region that controls regional groundwater flow dynamics and reactive transport processes. While experimental procedures have been developed to study the movement of salt wedges in aquifers, so far no one has attempted to exclusivelymap themixing zone associated with the wedge in a laboratory-scale aquifer model. We propose a colorimetric experimental method, which employs the reaction between alkaline freshwater and acidic saltwater, to map the mixing zone. The experiment was completed in a two-dimensional aquifer model to simulate a steady saltwater wedge. We used the density-dependent flow model SUTRA to simulate these experimental results and to estimate the mixing parameters, i.e., dispersivity coefficients. The results show that the proposed colorimetric technique is a useful experimental approach to visualize and quantify the level of mixing in a saltwater intrusion experiment. Laboratory and numerical investigation of transport processes occurring above and within a saltwater wedge.

Salt wedges divide coastal groundwater flow regime into two distinct regions that include a freshwater region above the saltwater-freshwater interface and a saltwater region below the interface. Several recent studies have investigated saltwater transport in coastal aquifers and the associated flow and mixing processes. Most of these studies, however, have either focused on studying the movemen...

Groundwater withdrawal in randomly heterogeneous coastal aquifers

We analyze the combined effects of aquifer heterogeneity and pumping operations on seawater intrusion (SWI) in coastal aquifers, a phenomenon which is threatening Mediterranean and worldwide regions. We conceptualize the aquifer as a three-dimensional randomly heterogeneous porous medium, where the spatial distribution of permeability is uncertain. The geological setting of our study is pattern...

Abstraction, desalination and recharge method to control seawater intrusion into unconfined coastal aquifers

In this study, abstraction, desalination and recharge method and SEAWAT numerical model are used to investigate seawater intrusion repulsion in a hypothetical two-dimensional coastal aquifer to understand the relation of seawater intrusion with abstraction, desalination and recharge parameters (i.e. abstraction/recharge rate, wells distance and depth). Abstraction, desalination and recharge con...

Laboratory investigation of water extraction effects on saltwater wedge displacement

There is a close connection between saltwater intrusion into aquifers and groundwater extraction. Freshwater extraction in coastal aquifers is one of the most important reasons for the saltwater intrusion into these aquifers. Condition of extraction system such as well depth, discharge rate, saltwater concentration and etc. could affect this process widely. Thus, investigating different extract...

Heterogeneous Dispersive Henry Problem

The effect of heterogeneity on seawater intrusion is analyzed. Heterogeneity in hydraulic properties such as hydraulic conductivity is well known to significantly affect groundwater flow and solute transport. Yet, few studies [Mc Kribbin and O`Sullivan, 1980; Schincariol and Schwartz, 1990; Schincariol et al., 1997 and 1998; Simmons et al., 2001] have focused on evaluating the impact of heterog...
